THE COLLECTS: Almighty and everlasting God, who dost govern all things in heaven and earth; Mercifully hear the supplications of thy people, and grant us thy peace all the days of our life. And who by the fruitful virginity of blessed Mary hast bestowed upon mankind the reward of eternal salvation: grant, we beseech thee, that we may know the help of her intercession., though whom we have been accounted worthy to receive the Author of our life, Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord; And we beseech thee, O Lord, favourably to receive the prayers of thy Church: that all adversity and error being done away, she may serve thee in untroubled freedom. Through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. AMEN
FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 42:1-7 [1] Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him, he will bring forth justice to the nations.v[2] He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street;v[3] a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.v[4] He will not fail or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.v[5] Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon itvand spirit to those who walk in it:v[6] “I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations,v[7] to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.
PSALM 29 A Psalm of David.
[1] Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
[2] Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name; worship the LORD in holy array.
[3] The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, upon many waters.
[4] The voice of the LORD is powerful, the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
[5] The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
[6] He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Si’rion like a young wild ox.
[7] The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
[8] The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness, the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
[9] The voice of the LORD makes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forests bare; and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
[10] The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king for ever.
[11] May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost…………………..
THE GRADUAL: Psalm 107. The Lord sent his Word and healed them: and they were saved from their destruction. O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness: and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men. Alleluia, alleluia. Psalm 148. Praise the Lord, all ye Angels of his : praise him all his host. Alleluia
THE HOLY GOSPEL: Saint Mark:1-THE beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camels hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased
THE OFFERTORY: Psalm 66. O be joyful in God, all ye lands: sing praises unto the honour of his Name: O come hither and hearken, all ye that fear God : and I will tell you what the Lord hath done for my soul. Alleluia.
