Imposition of Ashes and Mass

March 5 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST

The Imposition of Ashes, also known as Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian liturgical calendar. During this solemn service, ashes made from the burnt palms of the previous year’s Palm Sunday are applied to the foreheads of congregants in the shape of a cross. This ritual serves as a reminder of human mortality and the need for repentance, with the priest often reciting phrases like “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” or “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

Following the imposition of ashes, many congregations celebrate the Eucharist or Mass, a central worship act in the Anglican Catholic Church and some other Christian denominations. The Mass includes readings from Scripture, prayers, a homily, and the sharing of Holy Communion. This part of the service reinforces the themes of repentance and reflection during the Lenten season, encouraging the faithful to deepen their relationship with God through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. Combining the Imposition of Ashes with the Mass provides a great opportunity for spiritual renewal and commitment as people start their Lenten journey.
