The Significance of Epiphany

The First Sunday of Epiphany holds profound importance as it commemorates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. This event symbolizes the commencement of Jesus’ public ministry, a pivotal moment in Christian history.

At St. Timothy’s ACC, we celebrate this day with reverence and joy, reflecting on the divine revelation of Christ as the Son of God. Our church, rooted in traditional Anglican Catholic values, embraces this occasion to deepen our faith and understanding of the Gospel.

Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist

Matthew 3:13-17

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

A Story to Remember

In the heart of Judea, where dusty roads wound their way through sun-drenched hills, a sense of anticipation hung in the air. People from every corner of the region had gathered along the banks of the Jordan River, drawn by the compelling teachings of a man known as John the Baptist. He spoke with a fiery passion, calling for repentance, urging the crowds to turn away from their sins and prepare their hearts for something momentous that was to come.

John wore simple clothes made of camel’s hair and sustained himself on honey and locusts, a figure as rugged as the wilderness he inhabited. His voice boomed with authority, echoing off the riverbanks, and the people listened intently, many moved to tears as they acknowledged their misgivings. “Repent!” he cried. “Prepare the way of the Lord!”

In the midst of the throng stood a figure who drew little attention — at first. Jesus of Nazareth, humble and unassuming, felt the weight of the moment. He had been quietly living among his people, growing in wisdom and understanding, yet he felt an undeniable pull toward the river. The time had come for him to step into the light.

As Jesus approached, John noticed him. The crowd fell silent, and an air of reverence settled around them. John’s eyes widened in recognition; he had been waiting for the arrival of the Messiah, and here stood the very embodiment of that promise. Uncertain for a moment, he exclaimed, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

But Jesus responded with unwavering calm. “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” With that, John understood and nodded, his heart brimming with conviction.

As Jesus stepped into the cool waters of the Jordan, the moment seemed to stretch infinitely. The river swirled gently around him, a symbol of transformation and renewal. With a humble heart, Jesus was lowered beneath the surface—a sign of his solidarity with the people and the burdens they bore.

The heavens opened as he emerged, droplets of water splashing into the air like jewels falling from the sky. And then, amid the whispering of the crowd, a remarkable thing happened. A brilliant light shone from above, and the Spirit of God descended like a dove, resting upon him. A voice resounded through the air, powerful yet tender, proclaiming, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased.”

The people were awestruck, witnessing this divine revelation. In that moment, the baptism of Jesus marked not just a personal commitment but the beginning of a new chapter in the story of faith—a dawning realization that the Kingdom of God was near.

As the crowd erupted in murmurs of astonishment, Jesus stepped back onto the riverbank, fully aware that his journey was just beginning. His heart, now filled with the Spirit, would propel him into the world to heal the broken, comfort the weary, and reveal the depth of God’s love for humanity.

From that day forth, the baptism by John became a symbol of a transformative faith, a call to every person to seek a deeper relationship with God. And as Jesus walked away, the waters of the Jordan flowed on, carrying with them the echoes of a moment that would change the course of history forever.
