Easter 3 – Saint Mark the Evangelist: A Celebration of Truth, Growth, and Abiding in Christ
The readings for Easter 3: Saint Mark the Evangelist center on thanksgiving, spiritual maturity, and steadfast faith rooted in Christ.
The Introit (Psalm 95) opens with a joyful call to worship, inviting God’s people to sing, give thanks, and kneel before the Lord who is both Creator and Shepherd. This sets a tone of reverence and gratitude, reminding the Church that all creation belongs to God and that believers are lovingly cared for as “the sheep of his hand.”
The Collect for Saint Mark highlights the Church’s gratitude for the evangelist’s teaching and prays for discernment and stability in faith. It asks that Christians not be “carried away with every blast of vain doctrine,” but instead be firmly established in the truth of the Gospel. This prayer reflects Saint Mark’s role as a faithful witness and teacher of Christ’s saving message.
In the Epistle (Ephesians 4:7–16), Saint Paul speaks of the gifts Christ gives to the Church—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—so that believers may grow into spiritual maturity. The passage emphasizes unity in faith, speaking the truth in love, and growing together into Christ, who is the head of the Church. The image is one of a living body, strengthened as each part faithfully does its work.
The Gospel (John 15:1–11) presents Jesus’ teaching of the true vine and the branches. Christ calls his followers to abide in him, for apart from him they can bear no fruit. This abiding relationship leads to fruitfulness, obedience, and joy, all to the glory of God the Father. The passage closes with Christ’s promise that life in him brings fullness of joy.
Together, these readings celebrate Saint Mark’s witness and remind the Church that true life and growth come from remaining rooted in Christ, united in faith, and grounded in the truth of the Gospel.
